What is a degree/enrollment verification?
A verification is a request for a university to verify a student’s degree and enrollment information. Unlike a transcript, a verification is simply a confirmation of degrees earned and does not include course grades.
How much does it cost?
- Verifications requested through the National Student Clearinghouse are free of charge to students.
- Verifications requested through the UIC Office of the Registrar Online Certification Request system is as follows:
- Limit to 4 requests* per term without a charge being assessed, after the 4th request a $5 charge will be assessed for each additional request, unless otherwise noted.
- this pertains to all requests except for those noted below.
- Course Descriptions $10 charged for full academic history or $5.00 per specific individual course
- Diploma Copy for Medical Licensure; Alumni must submit a photocopy of their diploma with submission and will be assessed a $5.00 charge.

Who can request a verification on my information?
Any third party (e.g., loan offices, employers, insurance companies) can request a verification on your behalf. Requests go through the National Student Clearinghouse. The third parties will need your personal information such as name, Social Security number (or student ID for International Students) and date of birth in order to complete a request.
Is the enrollment verification letter an official document?
Yes, an enrollment verification letter is an official document on a letterhead with the University Registrar’s signature and seal.
When may I request an Enrollment Verification?
Enrollment Verifications may be requested for a prior term or the current semester once a student has enrolled in classes.
What is the processing time?
- Enrollment verifications requested through the National Student Clearinghouse are available immediately.
- Enrollment verification requested through the UIC Office of the Registrar Online Certification Request system “Certificate Request” are typically processed within a day depending on when requests are submitted. Students requesting a form be completed by Records, such as insurance forms, good student discounts, and common applications can expect 3-5 business days for processing during peak times (usually the first weeks of the semester).
What type of information is provided?
- An Enrollment Verification includes the following information: Student name, University Identification Number and if requested Social Security number; semester dates; enrollment status (part or full-time status); college and major. The Enrollment Verification does not contain enrolled hours; Grade Point Average (GPA) information; anticipated graduation date, unless specifically requested.
- For graduates, degree type, program, and honors are reported.
- If you have a FERPA block in place, the information is still reported, but information protected under FERPA is withheld from the third parties by the NSC.
- If a third party requires more detailed academic information, the student can request a transcript or they can submit through the UIC Office of the Registrar Online Certification Request system “Certificate Request” and uploaded the student authorization in order for the Records unit to be able to release any information that is not considered Directory Information .
My insurance company has provided me with a form. Can this be filled out?
Insurance company forms may be filled out by the Records unit provided that all the information on the forms can be verified. If we are unable to complete the insurance company form, we will supply our own Enrollment Verification as an alternative.
Will an enrollment letter list all enrolled terms?
You may select to include all terms enrolled (current and past terms) or only one individual prior term enrolled.
How can I get an enrollment letter with my expected graduate date/other notes?
You may submit an online request system and in the comment section you may indicate that you wish to include your expected graduation date and type in the date if it is different from the system.
I’m a new student, why can’t I get an enrollment letter?
Enrollment verification letters will be available once you enroll in classes. If you’re a new incoming student who has yet to enroll in any courses, an enrollment letter will not be available.
My employer/loan provider said they can’t verify my ENROLLMENT for the term, what’s going on?
- Timing:
The employer, loan provider or other 3rd party might have attempted to verify enrollment before you signed up for classes and/or before the information was reported to the National Student Clearinghouse*. Please note enrollment information is sent to the National Student Clearinghouse following the 10th day of classes. - If you are in need of an enrollment verification for student loan purposes after you have enrolled but before enrollment has been reported to the National Student Clearinghouse, you can ask your lender for a loan deferment form. The Office of the Registrar can verify enrollment for the upcoming semester on this form.
- The National Student Clearinghouse is a nationwide verification service.
- Privacy restrictions:
Under FERPA, UIC won’t verify education records if you have selected to block the release of information related to your name, enrollment status and dates of attendance. If such restrictions are in place, enrollment information will only be verified if the requestor provides us with a release you have signed.
What other policies should I know about?
In accordance with the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA), records may not be released to a third party without the prior written authorization of the student. Enrollment Verification requests may also include GPA information when requested from the requester with written authorization. Please specify at the time of request.
When can I get a degree verification letter?
- A degree verification letter is available once a degree is posted. The amount of time is variable due to final grading and reviews for completion by school/college degree clearance staff, but most degrees will be posted within a couple of weeks following the conferral date.

I’m completed all my requirements; can I get a degree verification letter?
No, a degree verification will only be available once a degree is posted.
However you can submit a request for completion of requirements with an anticipated graduation date but the your college will need to submit a letter to the Records department confirming this fact once you have submitted your online request here .
My employer/loan provider said they can’t verify my DEGREE, what’s going on?
- Timing:
The employer, loan provider or other 3rd party might have attempted to verify degree before you’ve been awarded and/or before the information was reported to the National Student Clearinghouse*. Please note degree information is sent to the National Student Clearinghouse following the conferral date once every friday for 4 weeks. - If you are in need of degree verification for student loan purposes after you have graduated but before degree has been reported to the National Student Clearinghouse, you can submit an online request here.
- The National Student Clearinghouse is a nationwide verification service.
